Should You Keep a Diary or Journal? / by Ben Courtwright

Personally, I do have a journal. It is on my phone and I use an app called Day One. Which is accessible from the computer or mobile app. It saves my entries in the cloud so I can access them whenever I need them without worrying about them getting deleted. I prefer having my journal on my phone rather than on paper because it is more portable, and I don’t have to worry about it getting lost or stolen. I can also put a lock on my journal, so I don’t have to worry about anyone reading it. Journaling is a great thing to do in my opinion because it helps you channel your feelings and thoughts into writing. Like a photograph, it records a moment in time. I have had my journal for 3 years now and I still write in it when I feel the need to. I don’t try and force myself to write. I write when I feel like I need to. It means more to me when I have the will to write than to just put something out there without taking the time or effort to put something with meaning out. When you are writing with will it just comes out the words are so pure and raw in form. I find it really special and you can learn about yourself in a new way; through writing. So, do I recommend you keep a journal or diary? Absolutely yes. Do you have to write in it every morning right when you get out of bed? No. Journaling is there for you to pour your thoughts and feelings into words, through stories or from personal experiences. When it feels like you cannot talk to anyone, writing in a journal can help be safe place to sort out your feelings and come to terms with yourself. It’s not always going to be pretty and that’s okay. It’s about you and your feelings which is why it is so important to journal because it is setting time aside for you. And you are so important.
